There is a belief among many conservatives that everyone owes a debt of gratitude to Christianity because our culture and our democracy is based on Christian beliefs. Specifically, people like Dinesh D’Souza have claimed church/state separation is a biblical idea because Jesus said, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
Drew McCoy (a.k.a. Genetically Modified Skeptic) does a great job responding to that awful talking point.
(I love the random annotations thrown in there.)
Drew’s point is clear: We are not a Judeo-Christian nation, even in terms of our values. We can do so much better than that — and, in many ways, we have.
