According to a segment on the Christian Broadcasting Network on Wednesday, many white evangelical leaders are concerned that a Democratic wave in the midterm elections could spell disaster for the Religious Right’s agenda.
If that’s not enough motivation for Democrats to vote this November, I don’t know what is…
If Democrats take control of Congress, they “are going to move to impeach the president” right-wing political operative Ralph Reed told CBN. “There’s no question about it.”
“We are really clear about what we are doing,” said [Christian nationalist David] Lane. “There is no hidden agenda about it. We’re trying to restore America to our Judeo-Christian heritage and reestablish a biblically-based culture in America.”
Those comments should appear in Democrats’ campaign ads.
Besides those things, Democrats have the opportunity to stop the appointments of unqualified right-wing judges, hold politicians accountable for their scandals, prevent further demonization of minorities and the poor, and put an actual check on Donald Trump.
It’s everything most white evangelicals want to avoid. They’re perfectly happy looking the other way as people suffer under this administration as long as Trump keeps nominating justices from their pre-approved list and gives them the lip service they so desperately crave.
Lying about jobs? Dismissing African nations as “shithole countries”? Having an affair with a porn star shortly after his third wife gave birth to his fifth child, then paying her hush money? Jesus didn’t care about any of those things, apparently.
The ironic thing is that, if evangelicals want any chance at their own redemption, they should welcome a Blue Wave in 2018. If Republicans return to the minority, the Christian Right will once again be able to blame the other side for their inability to pass anti-LGBTQ, anti-women, anti-education legislation. They can pretend to have the moral high ground once again. That’s what they want! They love to complain, but Democrats have taken that away from them by letting them control Congress. (How dare we?)
We can put them out of their misery this November by winning both houses of Congress.
