Over the past couple of months, many human rights activists have been concerned about the plight of Sherif Gaber, the Egyptian atheist who was first arrested in 2013 for posting about his conversion out of Islam, ran away before authorities could put him in jail, and then made YouTube videos from an undisclosed location.
In March, we heard there was a blasphemy charge filed against him. Sherif said he might get arrested again. Last week, he sent a message to his fans saying the police had captured him… but days later, he tweeted that he was free again.
It’s a reminder of how tough it for ex-Muslims to speak out, especially when they’re living in theocracies. Maybe Sherif continue to be safe.
