It’s not surprising that a Christian would trying to explain the devastating wildfires in California by saying it’s God’s wrath for something. But what message was God trying to send in this case?
According to anti-LGBTQ Pastor Kevin Swanson, God was punishing the state for turning “pedophiliacs and homosexuals into heroes.”
“In fact, it was the year of God’s judgment on the state of California as well,” he continued. “It was the year that California introduced 10 textbooks into public schools that turned sodomites — that is, men from Sodom doing what men from Sodom like to do — and turning pedophiliacs and homosexuals into heroes. That was the point of the 10 textbooks that were issued for the first time. I believe that Jerry Brown signed the bill that encouraged homosexual indoctrination in California public schools for six-, seven-, eight-, nine- and 10-year-olds and that came into fruition for the first time.”
“Ten textbooks were introduced into California public schools that presented pedophiliacs and homosexuals as heroes,” Swanson said. “This was the year that happened. It also happened to be the year that God brought the most severe possible judgment on California.”
I wouldn’t take these claims very seriously. After all, when Texas was hit by Hurricane Harvey, Swanson blamed Houston for having “a very, very aggressively pro-homosexual mayor… even though that mayor had been out of office for a year and a half. He also blamed the state for not passing an anti-transgender bathroom bill, as if Texas is too safe for trans people.
Swanson also said God would stop Hurricane Irma if the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and the Obergefell rulings, thereby banning abortion and marriage equality.
Why did Roy Moore lose the Senate race in overwhelmingly Christian Alabama? Well, said Swanson, “Alabama must have a problem with sexuality.”
There’s no problem in Swanson’s world that can’t be fixed by throwing LGBTQ people under the bus. They deserve it, in his mind, because they caused all the problems.
So why are the wildfires actually as destructive as they’ve been? There’s no single answer, though California’s extensive drought, climate change, a heat wave, and effects of La Niña may all play a role in the matter.
Science, somehow, never made it into Swanson’s ignorant rant.
