In case you were worried that Congress might get more sensible in 2018, no need to worry. There will be plenty of irrational candidates for Republicans to embrace next year, including Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, a U.S. House candidate from Florida who claims she was once taken up in an alien spaceship and had spoken with the extraterrestrials several times since.
Three blond, big-bodied beings — two females, one male — visited her when she was 7 years old and have communicated telepathically with her several times in her life, she says.
“I went in. There were some round seats that were there, and some quartz rocks that controlled the ship — not like airplanes,” Rodriguez Aguilera said.
Videos in which Rodriguez Aguilera spoke about these encounters are several years old. She didn’t confirm her encounters with reporters from McClatchy, but she did tell them she was a Christian with “a strong belief in God.” (Which, let’s be fair, isn’t exactly a stretch from saying she’s spoken to aliens, but that’s another story…)
She’s running to take the seat of retiring Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. It’s a seat Democrats are certainly vying for since voters in the District went strongly for Hillary Clinton in 2016. This story doesn’t help Rodriguez Aguilera’s case at all. And it shouldn’t.
If she does win, though, you can fully expect the GOP to put her on the House Science Committee.
