WV Sheriff’s Deputy Told Gay Student He’d “Burn in Hell” Like the Bible Says

Clay County (West Virginia) sheriff’s deputy Robert Belt, who doubles as a bus driver for a local school district, allegedly yelled anti-gay slurs at a student earlier this month.

The Nicholas County Democratic Organization posted the details on Facebook yesterday:

On Tuesday morning, September 5th, 2017, an openly gay student from Clay County High School in Clay, West Virginia, boarded the school bus of part-time driver, Robert Belt, and sat down beside another student. Allegedly, Robert Belt, also a full-time Clay County Sheriff Deputy, dressed in full uniform, announced over the bus PA system, “No faggot activity will be permitted on this bus. In my Bible it states that ‘faggots will burn in Hell,’ and I will not condone it.”

I’m not sure which Bible verse that is, but Jesus clearly had a potty mouth.

Superintendent Joe Paxton says the district is investigating the allegations.

If they turn out to be true, though, it’s tough to see how Belt could remain in either job. Obviously, he shouldn’t be a bus driver in the district. But why should he be a law enforcement officer when he doesn’t give a damn about a group of people who are often bullied and the victims of hate crimes? A cop who cares more about enforcing the Bible than the law is in the wrong line of work.
