Anti-Gay Christian Leader: We’re Being Treated Like Jews in Nazi Germany

Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver loves hyperbole. He’s referred to the “genocide” of abortion and called the Boy Scouts a “playground for pedophiles.”

Somehow, his latest comparison is even worse.

During a recent interview on VCY America’s “Crosstalk” radio program, he was complaining about how some Christian organizations, including his, were on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of anti-gay hate groups. There’s a reason for that: They spread malicious lies about people who are gay… like saying they’re pedophiles. Staver, of course, thinks they’re just coming after these groups for being Christian (which is silly, since you won’t find any evangelical churches on the list even though they oppose LGBTQ rights).

When the host, Jim Schneider, asked him when this persecution of Christians would end, Staver went into Doomsday mode:

“I think that’s a question that everyone listening here needs to answer,” he said, “I think we’ve crossed the line and we can’t let this go any further. We’ve got to push back, it cannot happen like this. You know, if you go back into the 1930s, what ultimately happened back then with the Jews — and history, you know, there’s other histories you can point to — but they began to ultimately ban Jews from public employment, then ban Jews from their private employment, then put a Star of David on their ID and a Star of David on their passport, restrict their travel, restrict their income opportunity, and eventually you know what happened, we had to fight a World War II over that issue.

There you go. Conservative Christians today are just like Jews in Nazi Germany. (Give or take a few minor details.) I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that at least a few of those Jews would be happy to trade places with Staver whenever time travel starts working.

Miranda Blue at Right Wing Watch also points out that it’s a bit ironic for Staver to mention how Nazis restricted Jews’ travel when Staver himself was a firm supporter of Donald Trump‘s anti-Muslim travel ban.

Staver doesn’t know what real persecution is like. How could he? He’s usually the one doing the persecuting. And that’s why his group deserves to be on a hate list.
