In a disturbing story from New Zealand, a church youth group leader is on trial over more than two dozen charges. In plain English, he’s accused of forcing a then-14-year-old girl to give him oral sex, impregnating her, and punching her in the stomach when he thought she was pregnant.
Samuel Patrick Dockary, 23, is facing 26 charges including rape, indecent assault, and unlawful sexual connection.
He pleaded not guilty at the beginning of his trial at the Hamilton District Court on Tuesday.
The offences are alleged to have taken place in Auckland and Waikato between September 1, 2011 and March 1, 2013, and involve two complainants, both of whom were aged under 16 at the time.

Further alleged incidents followed, with Dockary becoming increasingly persistent. On one occasion he allegedly forced her to give him oral sex, telling her it was her “job” to fellate him.
She said she had wanted to vomit and was scared of how aggressive he had become.

“He at one stage believed I was pregnant. He was quite paranoid.”
Dockary then allegedly punched her in the stomach.
“He said ‘If there is a baby in there, I have just killed it,” she said.
Makes you wonder what the hell he was teaching (or learning) at church.
Even his lawyer knows there’s no way to reconcile his alleged actions and his faith. While she said Dockary “confirmed all of the sexual-related activity… apart from sexual intercourse,” she’s asking the jury to avoid “applying morality, certainly not Christian morality,” and focus instead on the issue of consent. Legally speaking, she may have a point, but that disconnect between his public piety and his private actions is hard to miss.
The trial is set to end next week.
