Did you pray for GOP Rep. Steve Scalise this week after the assassination attempt at a congressional baseball game practice? If you’re an atheist, did you at least feel bad for him?
Well, conservative commentator Jesse Lee Peterson saw congressional Democrats pray together with Republicans after the official game this week and he wasn’t buying their love fest. Because Democrats, as we all know, are demon spawn.
“This is not real,” Peterson said. “What are the Democrats praying for? The Democrats are not of God. All of a sudden when Scalise gets shot, when they hear about the shooting, all the children of Satan are going to come together and pray? Please!”
“The Democrats don’t love God,” he continued. “They could care less about God. Their father is Satan and that’s the reality.”
“Why would you want to pray with the children of Satan?” Peterson rhetorically asked Republicans. “They serve a different God than you. That’s reality.”
As someone who would love to be able to say the Democrats have given up on God, I assure you they haven’t. They’re as religious as everyone else in Washington.
It’s scary to hear someone, even Peterson, say Democrats and Republicans pray to a different God, though. If the chasm is already divided with them, what happens with people who aren’t Christian? Or religious at all? If Democrats are children of Satan, atheists must be significantly worse in the mind of Peterson and his followers.
This must be what it looks like when the Right tones down its hateful rhetoric after a tragedy.
