Joyner talked about how his own mother suffered from the “worst case of paranoid schizophrenia ever” with the anger that usually accompanies it. But she was cured! (Can you guess how?)
The relevant portion begins at the 3:42 mark:
… she started becoming really paranoid when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I mean, seriously, she became, what I overhead doctors saying, the worst case of paranoid schizophrenia ever. And that’s what they were saying. I don’t know if that’s true, if that was their opinion…
… Finally, I prayed because, when I came to the Lord, I came through a real supernatural experience. I saw and understood the good and the evil side of the supernatural. And so I just said, you know, I just prayed the Lord to bind the spirits in my mother — the demons — and she immediately stopped this rage…
He goes on to say his mother began speaking in tongues and changed completely. His family eventually converted not long after that, too.
I’m glad his mother got better at the time — she passed away recently — but it’s worth noting that demons aren’t a symptom of paranoid schizophrenia, and prayer has never been shown to cure it. There are antipsychotic medications that can help, but asking God to cure a mental illness doesn’t do the trick.
Joyner wanted to see his “real” mother again, which is perfectly understandable, but it sounds like he took any change in her behavior as a sign that his prayers worked.
There’s just no proof that’s what caused a change.
