American Atheists’ Amanda Knief appeared on Tucker Carlson‘s show last night to talk about a Christian bench, sponsored by the VFW, that needed to be removed from government property. The bench read, “Men Who Aren’t Governed By God, Will Be Governed By Tyrants,” an obvious slap in the face to all those atheists and other non-Christians who died for this country.
Knief’s group offered to pay for a new bench. Not with the words, “Men Who Are Governed By God, Will Be Governed By Tyrants,” which would demean religious people, but with a quotation approved by the VFW that respected all veterans. At most, her group would ask that the bench include the words “Paid for by American Atheists” since they were covering all the costs.
Tucker Carlson, spouting Fox News propaganda, said that would be an endorsement of atheism. Somehow.
Now Creationist Ken Ham is making the same mistake, claiming that a secular bench paid for by atheists amounts to government endorsement of atheism.
No wonder Ken Ham would rather see the Christian bench forced upon everyone else in a public park than a secular quotation that doesn’t single anyone out. It’s much easier to claim atheists are the bad guys than to make a case for Christian privilege.
He can name-call us all he wants, but the simple fact is that if atheists acted like Christians are in this story, Ham would immediately call it a case of persecution.
