A few days ago, Religious Right leader Bryan Fischer claimed on Twitter that gay people stole the rainbow from God.
That tweet made him a laughingstock (again), and it looks like it caught up to him, because he brought it up again on his radio show yesterday. He didn’t apologize. He didn’t clarify. He just doubled down on his nonsense. He didn’t just repeat the line about cultural appropriation; he argued that God’s rainbow was proof that climate change is a hoax.
“The rainbow is God’s,” Fischer said. “God invented the rainbow — look at Genesis 9:11-17 — He invented it, it’s His thing, He put it in the sky as a promise that he would never again destroy the earth through a flood. Are you listening Al Gore? Al Gore, you do not need to worry about the planet being destroyed by floodwaters. Why? Because God has put His rainbow in the sky to let you and everybody else know, ‘I’m never going to do that again.’”
The LGBTQ community, Fischer warned, “is using something that doesn’t belong to you. That’s cultural appropriation … You’ve culturally appropriated something that doesn’t belong to you, it belongs to God, it’s His idea and you need to give it back.”
There you have it. God gave us a rainbow, which gay people later stole, in order to protect us from the science of Al Gore.
I can’t wait for the release of An Inconvenient Sequel. It’ll just be two hours of a rainbow followed by a thumbs up sign.
