S-Town is a Remarkable, Engrossing Story of an Eccentric Atheist and the People in His Life

Like many of you, I’m sure, I spent a good part of my weekend listening to all seven episodes of the new podcast S-Town, produced by the same people who make Serial and This American Life. (There are no spoilers below.)

It’s a fascinating story about John B. McLemore, a science-loving, climate change-obsessed atheist living in about as rural a part of Alabama as you could find. No wonder he calls the area Shit Town.

The seven episodes take you inside his life, his eccentricities, and the people who know him best. And while there are controversies regarding just how much we learn about the main characters, the story wouldn’t have been as compelling without those details.

One of the running themes of this site has always been how atheists deal with the people around them when our opinions are so out of sync with everyone else’s. While atheism isn’t the central theme of this podcast, being a fish out of water certainly is, and that’s something a lot of readers can surely relate to.
