As much as I hate to see the ascendency of the Religious Right to the highest levels of government, there’s a part of me that thinks this is bound to backfire on them. Donald Trump has to be the worst politician evangelical Christian could possibly have latched onto, and now they’re stuck with him. Whatever he does will forever be a reflection on their judgment.
Policies that ban refugees seeking American help? Embracing “alternative facts” instead of reality? Fighting to rip away health insurance from tens of millions of citizens? Those are now the positions of evangelical churches everywhere, whether they like it or not, because they didn’t do nearly enough to prevent his presidency, and they’re still not doing anything to denounce him. They’re blinded by their forced-birth glasses to the point where everything else can slide.
All the more reason for Pastor Robert Jeffress to go even further during an episode of Daystar TV’s Marcus And Joni, where he said God intervened to make Trump President.
Jeffress told host Marcus Lamb that he was overcome by emotion while delivering his sermon “because I realized what God had done” to save this nation by electing Trump.
“To me, it was so obvious that God had intervened in that situation,” Jeffress said. “I believe He intervened for Christians in this country. I really do. I think we got a reprieve, we got a little bit longer in this country to share the Gospel … The window will close again here in America; we had better take advantage on Daystar and every other opportunity we have to share the Gospel while we still have that opportunity.”
Riiiiight. As if no one ever heard from Christians until a week ago. As if we didn’t have a Christian in the White House for the past 308920493231 years. As if God intervened in our elections by giving Hillary Clinton the popular vote.
Jeffress is confusing God with Vladimir Putin. Which is probably for the best, since, at the rate we’re going, they’ll be one and the same in a few months.
