Raif Badawi’s Floggings Will Resume in Saudi Arabia, According to Inside Source

Blogger Raif Badawi is still sitting in a Saudi Arabian prison. He’s been there since 2012, all because he called for a more secular society. He was initially sentenced to 10 years in prison along with 1,000 lashes, but after the first 50 lashes in early 2015, he was indefinitely detained and his future has been up in the air ever since.

We just learned, however, that the lashes may soon resume after a nearly two year hiatus:

Evelyne Abitbol, who founded the Raif Badawi Foundation with Badawi’s wife, said a “reliable source” in Saudi Arabia claims he faces a new flogging after being sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and 1,000 lashes in 2014 for breaking the kingdom’s technology laws and insulting Islam.

Abitbol declined to name the source but said it was the same person who had alerted Badawi’s wife, Ensaf Haidar, in 2015 before he received his first 50 lashes, the only part of the flogging that was reportedly administered.

It’s all the more reason for various nations to demand a release of Badawi before the floggings resume. He’s suffered long enough for something that’s not even a real crime. It’s time for him to return to his family.
