Flood Ruins Home of Christian Right Leader Who Believes God Sends Hurricanes To Punish Sinners

We’re used to Religious Right leaders blaming natural disasters or horrific tragedies on completely unrelated liberal policies.

Jerry Falwell blamed 9/11 on atheists, abortionists, the ACLU, feminists, Pagans, and gays and lesbians.

Todd Starnes blamed “record-breaking floods” in Washington, D.C. on the Supreme Court’s gay marriage decision.

Pastor John Hagee blamed Hurricane Katrina on a planned “homosexual rally” (that never happened).

The Family Research Council’s bigot-in-charge Tony Perkins blamed the Boston Marathon bombing on “abortion, family breakdown, sexual liberalism, [and] religious hostility.” He also agreed with a guest on his radio show who blamed Hurricane Joaquin on gay marriage and legal abortion, adding that “God is trying to send us a message.”

You get the idea. Whenever something goes wrong, some ignorant big-name Christian is quick to blame it on whatever they don’t like.

Which raises the question: What message was God trying to send Tony Perkins over the weekend?

Because Perkins’ Louisiana home was flooded to the point where his family had to evacuate by canoe.

I don’t take delight in his suffering. I hope his family is okay and he can get back in his home sooner than the six months he says he’ll have to wait.

But I’d really love to know what sin Perkins committed that made God come after him… Because he must have angered God, right? Surely the ringleader of Christian bigots isn’t suddenly saying this was just a natural disaster that affected many people and “sin” had nothing to do with it!

He’ll never admit it. Neither will his Christian colleagues.

But the hypocrisy is deafening, isn’t it?
