Earlier this week, Donald Trump met with a large group of Christian leaders for what was widely seen as a way to pander to an evangelical base that isn’t yet enamored with him.
James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, was one of the attendees. And in an interview with Pastor Michael Anthony, he made a remarkable claim: Trump has recently become born again. Dobson even claimed to know the person who “led him to Christ.”
We get this exchange around the 1:39 mark:
DOBSON: There are a lot of people ministering to [Trump] personally… He did accept a relationship with Christ. I know the person who led him to Christ.
DOBSON: And that’s fairly recent.
ANTHONY: No kidding. How recent?
DOBSON: I don’t know when it was, but it has not been long.
DOBSON: I believe he really made a commitment, but he’s a baby Christian.
Well, if he’s a baby Christian, he definitely has the hands for it.
How recent could his conversion possibly be? Trump was in Scotland yesterday bragging about his new golf course while the nation he was in was unraveling at that moment — and no one with that much narcissism is ever going to put Christ above himself.
John Fea, a professor at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, isn’t buying this at all:
Instead of calling out Trump for a whole host of anti-Christian remarks and his “eye for an eye” approach to politics… these Christian leaders are making excuses for his behavior. In the process, they fail to perform the kind of divinely-ordained work they are called to do.
What happened on Tuesday in New York was the theo-political equivalent of money laundering. Dobson and his gang are making Trump clean so that he is worthy of evangelical votes.
Given Trump’s ever-growing list of Christian faux pas — Two Corinthians, anyone? — it’s just another reason to think Dobson is blinded by his faith and ignorant of what’s right in front of him.
If Trump is a born again Christian now, I dare you to tell me what’s changed from a few months ago, when he wasn’t. Or a few weeks ago. Or, hell, a few hours ago. Whenever he found God. He’s the same thin-skinned, sexist, xenophobic, ignorant asshole he’s always been.
Not that Dobson is ever worth listening to, but he should just come right out and say, “Trump doesn’t give a damn about Christianity, but that’s okay, because my standards have hit rock bottom.”
At least that would be honest.
