We’ve recently seen that well-known evangelicals are getting ready to board the Trump train. Christian leaders like American Values president Gary Bauer, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, and Family Leader president Bob Vander Plaats will all be present to kiss the Donald’s ring at a closed-door meeting scheduled to be held in New York City next month.
The problem is that Trump, married three times, is known to be barely religious, so the Christianist
bootlickers supporters will have to get really creative to make their round peg fit Trump’s square hole (hold the jokes). That means looking for every indicator, no matter how far-fetched, that could demonstrate what a devout fan of God the blustery billionaire really is.
Well, guess what — they have their proof!
At one recent meeting with Trump, evangelical leaders noted how he often flashes a signature hand gesture, with a thumb out and a finger point to the sky, as he enters and exits rallies.
“You see athletes do it all the time and it’s their chance to point to the sky, to thank God for their success,” said Pastor Mark Burns, CEO of a Christian television network based in South Carolina. “Trump does this all of the time, too. He’s giving reverence to the man upstairs.”
Conservative Christians are world champions at interpreting all manner of vagueness as a sure sign that the Bible is real and the Lord is on their side. Unsurprisingly, it comes naturally to them to draw goofy conclusions from the way a politician raises his hands.
No evidence is needed when you can just rely on faith and wishful thinking.
