Port Neches-Groves Superintendent Dr. Rodney Cavness is the first of what I’m sure will be many bigoted school leaders trashing the Obama administration’s guidelines for accommodating transgender students when it comes to bathroom usage.
“I got news for President Barack Obama. He ain’t my President and he can’t tell me what to do. That letter… is going straight to the paper shredder. I have 5 daughters myself and I have 2,500 girls in my protection. Their moms and dads expect me to protect them. And that is what I am going to do. Now I don’t want them bullied… but there are accommodations that can be made short of this. He (President Obama) is destroying the very fiber of this country. He is not a leader. He is a failure.”
Unless Cavness lives in a secret country within Texas, Obama is, in fact, his President. And putting the letter in the shredder doesn’t change the fact that preventing transgender kids from using the proper bathroom could be a violation of their civil rights, subject to penalty under the law.
This guy seems to be more interested in making school a living hell for trans students in order to pretend like he’s protecting thousands of others. Meanwhile, his hateful attitude is far more dangerous to these students than the prospect of them sharing the bathroom with classmates whose gender identity doesn’t match their genitalia.
As the Obama letter said, schools that aren’t LGBT-inclusive could face lawsuits or the loss of federal money in the future. The law, Cavness may be shocked to learn, is something that also applies to his country.
