“Family Values” Alabama Governor Caught Up in Sex Scandal

What do you call it when a “family values,” anti-LGBT rights, deeply religious politician gets caught in a sordid sex scandal?

At this point, I’d go with “unsurprising.”

The latest bit of unsurprising news comes out of Alabama, and it involves the state’s 73-year-old (very pious) Baptist Governor Robert Bentley. Bentley, for the record, is fiercely anti-marriage equality because he thinks we need to protect the sanctity of marriage and all that.

So why is he in the news?

Bentley’s former law enforcement secretary, Spencer Collier, said Wednesday during a news conference that he confronted the governor in 2014 about a recording that captured Bentley’s side of a conversation in which he told a woman that he loved touching her breasts. It is unclear in the recording if the woman is the aide, Rebekah Caldwell Mason.

According to Bentley, despite the references to physical aspects of their relationship, it was not physical. Whether or not this is true is more or less irrelevant, as it does nothing to diminish Bentley’s hypocrisy. After all, he is a governor who

… campaigned on a platform of supposed family values, stating on his campaign website in 2010 that, “I will ensure that Alabama does not follow the trend of allowing gay marriages or civil unions, and I will protect our state’s right to define marriage as between one man and one woman. I support the Defense of Marriage Act, affirming the right of states not to recognize same-sex marriages licensed in other states. Alabamians should work together to protect traditional marriage. The two-parent family provides the best environment of stability, discipline, responsibility, and character.”

No wonder Bentley was so worried about preserving “traditional marriage.” Alas, he was focused on the wrong threat.

Last fall, when the governor and his wife split after 50 years of marriage, there were widespread rumors about Bentley having had an affair, but yesterday the chatter became a legitimate story after Collier, up until recently Alabama’s top cop, held a press conference to say he’d been fired for failing to go along with a scheme to hide the governor’s personal misdeeds.

If only Bentley had figured out sooner that gay couples marrying literally had no impact on his marriage and he really should’ve focused more on not fondling (or fantasizing about fondling) another woman’s breasts.

Instead, Bentley’s wife filed for divorce last year after 50 years of marriage, and there are calls for Bentley to resign.

So much for those “family values.”
