Egyptian Justice Minister Fired After Joking That Even Muhammad Would Be Jailed for a Crime

Egypt’s Justice Minister Ahmed al-Zind wanted to show how seriously he took his job, which is why he said on Friday that anyone who broke the law would be prosecuted.

Anyone.

That was a bad idea.

Egypt’s Justice Minister Ahmed al-Zind has been sacked after boasting that he would jail Islam’s Prophet Muhammad himself if the prophet broke the law.

Mr Zind made the remark in a televised interview on Friday. He immediately said “God forgive me” and apologised the following day.

He was sacked by the Prime Minister, Sherif Ismail.

Specifically, when asked if he would ever jail journalists, al-Zind said, “Even if he was a prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.”

That’s how powerful the religious sensibilities are in the country. Even hypothetically suggesting that the Islamic prophet would be punished for a crime is enough to drive people crazy. (Muhammad’s lucky it was a joke, because you know…)

Al-Zind said it was a “slip of the tongue,” though it’s not like he just mispronounced someone else’s name. It’s like a U.S. Attorney General saying Jesus isn’t getting away with breaking the law, either. It’s purely rhetoric. No one deserves to lose a job over that.
