When a reporter asked Pope Francis for his opinion on Donald Trump, you knew the response would get a lot of attention no matter what it was. And the pontiff delivered:
“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said when a reporter asked him about Mr. Trump on the papal airliner as he returned to Rome after his six-day visit to Mexico.
That’s a great line, though let’s admit it doesn’t take the idea of a giant wall to question Trump’s faith.
He doesn’t ask for forgiveness, curses in his speeches, can’t decide if he likes the New Testament more than the Old Testament, and can’t even say the name of a Bible verse correctly.
Not that evangelical voters will care. If none of that other stuff stopped them from supporting a racist bigot like Trump, the Pope’s condemnation is hardly going to make a difference.
Stand by for Trump insulting the Pope on Twitter, which is where all great theological debates take place.
***Update***: Trump has responded in typical fashion:
"DONALD J. TRUMP RESPONDS TO THE POPE." Just when you thought this campaign couldn't get any more incredible. pic.twitter.com/Brh45BdEeE
