Donald Trump Would “Absolutely” Force Muslims to Register in a National Database

In an interview with Yahoo News yesterday, Republican President frontrunner Donald Trump said that he would consider going to extremes to prevent terrorism. Even if that meant collecting data on all the Muslims in the country.

“We’re going to have to do things that we never did before. And some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule,” Trump said. “And certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy. And so we’re going to have to do certain things that were frankly unthinkable a year ago.”

Yahoo News asked Trump whether this level of tracking might require registering Muslims in a database or giving them a form of special identification that noted their religion. He wouldn’t rule it out.

“We’re going to have to — we’re going to have to look at a lot of things very closely,” Trump said when presented with the idea. “We’re going to have to look at the mosques. We’re going to have to look very, very carefully.”

Later, to NBC News, Trump reiterated those comments and endorsed them directly:

Donald J. Trump, who earlier in the week said he was open to requiring Muslims in the United States to register in a database, said on Thursday night that he “would certainly implement that — absolutely.”

Mr. Trump was asked about the issue by an NBC News reporter and pressed on whether all Muslims in the country would be forced to register. “They have to be,” he said. “They have to be.”

Maybe we should brand them with a symbol and keep them in special camps, too. How does that sound, Donald?

I can’t say this enough: This guy represents the very best the Republican Party has to offer: A xenophobe with no political experience, who insults those who question him and can’t handle criticism in any form.

If President Obama even joked about treating Trump the way Trump would treat Muslims, the Fox News crowd would be up in arms over it. Remember: We’re talking about the same guy who said last month that he would consider shutting down mosques as if that would solve, not worsen, the ISIS crisis.

John Cassidy is absolutely right when he says:

Forcing every Muslim in the country to register for some sort of database would do nothing to secure the borders or stanch the flow of undocumented migrants. It also wouldn’t prevent the possibility of some radicalized and disaffected American youths deciding to join the jihadi cause. Indeed, by stigmatizing an entire religious community, it would make such behavior more likely.

Trump’s bigotry is just continuing unabated. And Republican voters are loving it. Their leading candidate is a walking invitation to invoke Godwin’s Law — and for once, there’s good reason for it.
