Ex-Muslim and current atheist Aliyah Saleem has an excellent video aimed at viewers who are pressured into wearing a hijab even if it’s not their choice. That’s not all Muslim women, she makes clear, but it’s a segment of Muslim women who often get ignored.
Keep in mind she’s not advocating that Muslim women take off their hijabs if they don’t want to. She just wants viewers to admit that there are many women who aren’t doing it voluntarily.
I learned a new word, too: hojabi. It’s a slur used against Muslim women who wear hijabs but have boyfriends or wear tight clothing. Similarly, when women choose not to wear the hijab at all, the assumption is that they’re doing it to attract men. That’s not the case at all for many of the women.
