I know it’s New Jersey, but this is still pretty messed up:
A New Jersey priest was arrested after he allegedly threatened a boy with a functioning musket.
The Bergen County prosecutor said 54-year-old Rev. Kevin Carter pointed the firearm at an 8-year-old inside St. Margaret of Cortona Church and he indicated he would shoot the boy.
The reality isn’t quite that scary. Just really, really stupid.
Carter is a fan of the New York Giants. The little boy is a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. So before Mass one day last month, Carter led the boy to the rectory, where witnesses saw Carter take out his gun and point it at the child’s head — apparently joking about the boy liking the wrong team. That’s when phone calls were made and authorities got involved.
“There’s no such thing as joking around with a weapon when you’re dealing with an 8-year-old kid,” [Bergen County Prosecutor John] Molinelli said.
The Archdiocese did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Carter is being held on $15,000 bail, charged with “endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated assault.” (Sadly, “shitty judgment” isn’t a crime by itself.)
It’s just the latest example of a boy traumatized for what a priest did to him in a rectory.
