Remember earlier this month when the conservative militant group Oath Keepers offered to “protect” Kim Davis from law enforcement officials if they tried to send her back to jail? It was a scary thought because these vigilantes with guns were suggesting they would take matters into their own hands if they didn’t like what the courts were saying. Eventually, Davis’ legal team asked the group to back off; the last thing they needed was another reason for people to denounce conservatives.
Well, the Oath Keepers have a new item on their agenda. They’ll be showing up in Texas to protect the giant sign that says “Jesus Welcomes You to Hawkins”:
After a brief legal showdown, and the looming prospect of a lawsuit from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the city council voted this week to remove the sign for good.
Not that any of that matters to the Oath Keepers:
Hawkins’ mayor Will Rogers tells KETK there have been threats of vandalism to the sign. So, the sign has some extra security. A local chapter of the Oath Keepers began standing guard starting Friday afternoon. A volunteer chaplain with the group says they’re making sure no one’s constitutional rights are taken away. He also says they’re not trying to overthrow the city of Hawkins.
Not sure who’s making those threats, but when the sign is already coming down, protecting it with a watchman seems over the top. Then again, over the top is what the Oath Keepers specialize in…
