When you think of unusual contract riders for musicians, Van Halen‘s request for M&Ms with all the brown ones taken out comes to mind. (They had a good reason for it.)
But here’s a surprise: Pharrell Williams, the singer/songwriter behind “Blurred Lines” and “Happy,” demands that a photo of Carl Sagan be placed in his dressing room before every show:
Says The Smoking Gun:
The 42-year-old Williams has spoken of being obsessed with Sagan since watching the original “Cosmos” series when he was a child. The Sagan photo demand actually appears twice in Williams’s list of dressing room requirements.
Williams also said in a Today interview:
“I watched ‘Cosmos’ as a child and I was always blown away by (Sagan’s) mind and the way he thought,” the singer explained. “When I look at that picture I realize how lucky we all are … to be on this planet and be able to do what we love to do every day. Seeing Carl’s face reminds me of it.”
Don’t get too excited, though.
Williams said in an interview last year that “it’s so incredibly arrogant and pompous” not to believe in a Higher Power.
He may like the picture of Sagan, but he sure as hell hasn’t internalized the science communicator’s message.
