In 2010, Utah Governor Gary Herbert (below) signed a bill charging women who arranged for an illegal abortion with “criminal homicide.” In 2012, he got behind a law requiring women to wait an unnecessary 72 hours before getting an abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice America calls him “anti-choice” while giving the whole state an “F” grade for its stances on abortion-related issues.
So look at what Governor Pro-Life did today:
Utah became the only state to allow firing squads for executions Monday when Gov. Gary Herbert signed a law approving the method’s use when no lethal-injection drugs are available.
As if the death penalty wasn’t bad enough in the first place, Herbert’s signature will allow for a practice he referred to in a gross understatement as “a little bit gruesome.” Given that lethal drugs for death penalty cases are getting harder to come by, this alternative could come to pass sooner than you think.
(What happens if there’s no ammo available? Will he opt for beheadings?)
So much for being “pro-life”…
Incidentally, prisoners in Utah currently have the option of requesting a firing squad if they want one… but this bill takes even that choice away from them.
This would be a good time to read the incredible New Yorker piece on Cameron Todd Willingham if you haven’t done so yet.
