A Glimpse at Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Upcoming Talk Show

The New York TimesDennis Overbye got a sneak preview of Neil deGrasse Tyson‘s upcoming show StarTalk, scheduled to premiere on the National Geographic Channel this April:

At tapings of prime-time shows like “The Big Bang Theory,” there is a person in charge of keeping the audience warmed up and excited during breaks in the action.

On “StarTalk,” the warmer-upper is Dr. Tyson himself, who began by teasing a reporter in the first row for being the only one not wearing black. He ruminated on the movies. Until recently, he said, most sci-fi films were “people go into space and something goes wrong.”

The article doesn’t scream “You have to watch this!” but it does show a work-in-progress that will hopefully find an audience. I’m skeptical of whether a show revolving around astrophysics will succeed because it’s a relatively narrow niche. But there’s plenty of room for intelligent conversation on late night television and I would gladly listen to Tyson’s take on subjects that go well beyond space.
