The Freedom From Religion Foundation’s infamous Winter Solstice sign just went up in the Milwaukee County Courthouse:
At this season of the Winter Solstice, may reason prevail.
There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell.
There is only our natural world.
Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.
Do you find that message a little pessimistic and off-putting? Well, that’s kind of the point:
FFRF placed the winter solstice message alongside devotional tchotchkes to point out that if a religious viewpoint is displayed on public property, dissent from religion must also be permitted. PEW surveys indicate that one in five Milwaukee County residents is nonreligious, and one in three young persons.
That’s about as dissenting as it gets. Remember: This isn’t about making atheism look good to religious people; it’s about making a point regarding religious displays. (Not that you can’t do both…)
But if you don’t like this sign, then you should be fighting to get city officials to stop allowing religious displays completely. Let people put up their nativity scenes in churches — and then we’ll follow suit by leaving our signs at home.
