Sally Jones: From Guitar-Wielding Rocker to Head-Sawing Jihadist

She traded in her Flying V for a Kalashnikov:

A middle-aged British mother-of-two and former rock band member has joined jihadists in Syria and wants to behead Christians with a blunt knife, British media reported. The reports identified the woman as Sally Jones, 45, from Kent in southeast England, and said she now goes by the name Sakinah Hussain, or Umm Hussain al-Britani…

Jones, a convert to Islam, travelled to Syria after an online romance with convicted 20-year-old computer hacker Junaid Hussain, and is now based in the IS stronghold of Raqqa. The Sunday Times said she had tweeted last week saying: “You Christians all need beheading with a nice blunt knife and stuck on the railing at Raqqa… Come here I’ll do it for you!

It’s possible that Jones has been on the receiving end of a bit of love jihad, and/or that her boyfriend is the one doing the tweeting — with her phone. Or she could truly have turned into a clear-eyed, non-coerced, committed jihadist warrior — just like her fellow British citizen Khadijah Dare appears to be, about whose head-cutting aspirations we wrote last week.

Here‘s another recent (head)case:

[A 16-year-old French girl] was arrested Saturday in the Nice airport in the south of France as she tried to board a plane to Turkey with the alleged intention of joining ISIS in Syria. Authorities announced that several hours later, they caught a 20-year-old man who had allegedly recruited her and paid for her plane ticket. The girl’s parents reportedly had no idea about their daughter’s plans.

As for the English women, they are part of a rising number of U.K.-based jihad joiners who now far outnumber the British Muslims who wear the U.K.’s military uniform, according to Newsweek:

Khalid Mahmood, the MP for Perry Barr in Birmingham, estimates that at least 1,500 young British Muslims have been recruited by extremists fighting in Iraq and Syria in the last three years. Mahmood told Newsweek that this figure had been building since the start of the Syrian conflict: “If you look across the whole of the country, and the various communities involved, 500 going over each year would be a conservative estimate.”

According to the Ministry of Defense, there are only around 600 British Muslims currently serving in the Armed Forces, making up approximately around 0.4% of total personnel. 4.3% of the British population are Muslim.
