President Obama Says His Campaign Volunteers and Other Supporters Are Doing ‘God’s Work’

Via Politico:

Touting the latest White House Obamacare benchmark, President Barack Obama told his political base not to be discouraged by partisan attacks and stressed that their cause is divine.

The president spoke those remarkable words at an Organizing for Action event in Washington.

“We’re going to make a big push these last few weeks,” Obama told OFA volunteers and officials. “I can talk, my team can talk here in Washington, but it’s not going to make as much of a difference as if you are out there making the case. The work you’re doing is God’s work.”

OFA, Wikipedia reminds us,

… is a nonprofit social welfare organization and community organizing project that advocates for the agenda of U.S. President Barack Obama. The organization is officially non-partisan, but its agenda and policies are strongly allied with the Democratic Party. It is the successor of Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.

Even though the president was talking specifically about the efforts to get millions of Americans to sign up for the healthcare system he brokered, it’s surely a little much for any politician to say that the people who helped him get elected are “doing God’s work.”

Furthermore, OFA has been credibly accused of selling access for cash. One year ago,

… the New York Times reported that donors contributing or raising $500,000 or more to Organizing for Action would put them on the group’s national advisory board, granting the privilege of attending quarterly meetings with the president.

Would that kind of political payola be “God’s work,” too?

I probably don’t have to point out here that Obama’s “You’re doing God’s work” phrase curiously ignores the toil performed by all manner of political and social-justice volunteers who are non-believers.

On the other hand, I can’t muster any sympathy for the anti-Obama crowd’s dishonest displays of bad faith either. Consider the noxious red meat that Breitbart News’ Sonnie Johnson tossed at her audience in a speech she delivered at a Tea Party get-together yesterday:

“Karl Marx had two main goals: to destroy capitalism and to dethrone God. So when you hear the leader of progressivism, a.k.a. American Marxism, say that you are doing ‘God’s work,’ understand he means it. He means you’re taking over God’s work. God must be dethroned.”

Obama, it’s safe to say, meant nothing of the sort.

A pox on both their houses.
