South Dakota Republicans Propose Bill to Promote Intelligent Design in School — and Protect Those Who Teach It

There’s a simple reason Intelligent Design and its unwanted cousin Creationism aren’t taught in public schools: They’re not science. It has nothing to do with some “anti-Christian” agenda on the part of administrators or teachers.

But the way South Dakota Senate Bill 112 reads, you’d think teachers were under attack for doing the right thing. Instead, the bill would allow teachers to preach Intelligent Design despite the fact that it’s essentially synonymous with pushing religion in the classroom:

Bill sponsors Senator Jeff Monroe (left) and Representative Brock L. Greenfield

FOR AN ACT ENTITLED, An Act to prohibit schools from preventing the instruction of intelligent design.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA:

Section 1. That chapter 13-33 be amended by adding thereto a NEW SECTION to read as follows:

No school board or school administrator may prohibit a teacher in public or nonpublic school from providing instruction on intelligent design or other related topics.

The law would allow Christian teachers — and you know we’re only talking about Christians here — to teach Intelligent Design in lieu of real science and not face any punishment for wasting students’ time.

The bill, sponsored by six senators and seven representatives — all Republican, of course — is currently in the Senate Education Committee. There’s some irony for you.

Even if passed, the bill would likely be found unconstitutional, but that’s no reason to pretend like it’s no big deal. These legislators are trying to undermine science education in the state and their constituents should make sure their voices get heard against this awful bill.
