Before you play this, a warning: Don’t use headphones except at low volume, and don’t turn your speakers up too high. Seriously.
This is Amy. She lives in America. She’s free to smile and to show she’s happy. Everyone is okay with this. Amy is a Christian. She’s also free to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ to show she’s happy. But not everyone is okay with this. We are one nation under God. No man owns Amy’s happiness. No man will define how she shows it.
The commercial is currently being shown on MSNBC and Fox in parts of New York and New Jersey.
Do you think that Rat Skates (a.k.a. Lee Kundrat), the guy who wrote and directed this for St. Mary’s Parish of Barnegat, NJ, really, honestly doesn’t know any better when he implies that American children are no longer allowed to refer to Christ or Christmas? Have we really still not succeeded in pounding into folks’ skulls that atheists actually do not object to Christmas displays and other religious objects in churches, private homes, places of business, and so on?
Or might this be Skates’ deliberate, cynical attempt to muddy the issue? I can’t accept that. That would be a lie, after all, and Christians (like Skates) wouldn’t lie. Their Ten Commandments forbid it.
Fun fact: Skates used to be the drummer of the trash metal band Overkill. I won’t stoop so low as to address him and executive producer Monsignor Kennard J. Tuzeneu with the name of one of Overkill’s recorded songs.
