Atheist Billboards Go Up in Idaho

The Treasure Valley Coalition of Reason in Idaho just put up two billboards reaching out to atheists in the Boise and Nampa areas:

The billboards, which cost $5,300, were paid for by the United Coalition of Reason. They’ll be up until July 29th.

“The point of our ongoing nationwide awareness campaign is to reach out to the millions of atheists and agnostics living in the United States,” explained Fred Edwords, national director of the United Coalition of Reason. “Such non-theists sometimes don’t realize there’s a community for them because they’re inundated with religious messages at every turn. We hope our effort will serve as a beacon and let them know they aren’t alone.”

Reaching out to the like-minded isn’t the only goal of the coalition: “We hope the public will realize that we are a regular part of the community,” said Susan Harrington, coordinator for Treasure Valley CoR. “People like us live all over Idaho. We’re your family and friends, coworkers and neighbors. We might even be sitting in a pew at your church.”

The last time we saw atheist billboards in Idaho, it was back in February to promote a Darwin Day event.

I was extremely tickled when, as I was traveling from Northern Oregon to Central California last week, I saw a sign that highway cleanup was sponsored by the First Atheist Church of True Science (FACTS).  I had to wait a day to look it up online and their website is kinda cheesy, but just seeing the word “ATHEIST” up there on a sign, rather than “God” or “evilution” was satisfying.

I’d LOVE to see a full-sized billboard like this someday!

  • You wrote, “The last time we saw atheist billboards in Idaho,” but then didn’t complete the sentence. It was in mid-February when the “Darwin on the Palouse” conference was held in Pullman, Washington, and just across the state line in Moscow, Idaho. UnitedCoR paid for those billboards, too.

  • There are others, but here are two full-size billboards featuring the word “atheist” from earlier this year:

  • Counting the minutes until they’re vandalized or Christian screeching forces them to be taken down.

  • Don’t know how that got cut off! Fixed.

While it would be nice to see an atheist billboard in Vermont, at least I don’t have to see religious ones…

Billboards are prohibited in Vermont. I know Maine also has that law…

I just saw this on my way to Downtown Boise this afternoon.  Warmed my heart to see it… for the half second I could before the sign switched to the next advertisement in its rotation.

Yep. Love it that we don’t see billboards in Maine.

Usually it’s something about how this is an “assualt” on their religion or something something the US is a Christian nation, blah blah…

    There’s a club?

Thank you for your help, Fred. Having your assistance coordinating with United CoR is very much appreciated.

  • Hopefully they’ll be up until the 29th. I hope they’re high enough in the air that somebody would have to be REALLY taken with the holy spirit to climb up there with the Holy Rattle-Can of Divine Retribution…

  • We could use a few of them down here in TX…
