My Summer Plans… and My Next Book June 12, 2012

My Summer Plans… and My Next Book

Most teachers will tell you that summer break isn’t actually a “break” at all. A lot of my colleagues teach summer school or work a second job in addition to spending time with their families. I suppose I could just sit in my underwear and blog all day, but that’d get boring after a while… plus, it sounds kinda creepy.

So what am I up to this summer?

I’m working on a book about high school atheists: How they’re getting more and more vocal, how they’re challenging religion in their public schools (by forming groups, challenging graduation prayers, etc.), what kinds of obstacles they face, how they’ve overcome them, how the rest of us can help… you get the idea.

The goal is to have it done and published by the time fall rolls around, when I go back to work and young atheists are back in school.

I’ll provide updates along the way — and throw out some questions in case I need more feedback on a particular section.

And then, when Patheos Press publishes the book in the fall, you’re all gonna buy multiple copies, right?!

C’mon, people. Don’t make me resell my soul on eBay.

“The goal is to have it done and published by the time fall rolls around,
when I go back to work and young atheists are back in school.”

That timeline seems a bit aggressive.  I would think a book would take longer than that for writing and for publishing, each.

But hey, go for it.  Good luck.

I thought so too at first, but he already has a publisher lined up, which is huge.  Plus, the way Hemant cranks out several blog posts a day I’d bet money on him doing it.

The book sounds interesting.  I have a rising 8th grader (and her two prospective HS choices do not have an SSA) so I’ll definitely buy one.  Good luck!

How would you even sell a second hand soul?

  • i’ll buy your  book before i buy PZ’s book.

wait? what? hell, i won’t be buying PZ’s book at all.

  • if you can sell nothing once, you can resell it too.

  • I’ll buy it.  If you do a signing in Toronto I’ll buy two.

A Kickstarter attempt seems likely to garner more than sufficient funds for research, travel, and publication. Just sayin’.

  • Should look into renting it.  Better ROI.

  • No funds needed. And Patheos covers the publication aspects. Hoping people just buy the finished product! 🙂

  • Sounds interesting, I’ll buy it!  🙂

I think you’ll have plenty of support. Looking forward to it. 🙂

May I recommend that you don’t have a glaringly neon cover? It might be hard for a high school student to be seen with a book that’s too obvious. Silly suggestion but I wanted to toss it out there.

With all due respect, I think I’ll wait for some reviews to come in before I commit to buy… especially since it looks likely to be a summer rush book.

  • Score. Thanks for the support! I think.

  • Patricia

Heavily considering buying enough copies to hand out to all your students at the door to your classroom so they can pull them out at a designated time in the middle of class… yess…

  • I’ll be sure to get a copy for the Lancaster Freethought Society lending library! (Lancaster, PA)

Patheos Press, eh? Is this the same Patheos that does nothing but push the Mormon church down everyone’s throats?

  • Not sure what you’re talking about. Might be the Google ads based on keywords…

  • MadSeamstress2000

well, even if you are not sitting around in your underwear, can I speak for my fellow Dirty OldLladies and request that your book’s cover photo be of  you similarly scantily clad?! teeheee.

  • No one wants to see this, I assure you.

I can not wait to read this book! I am entering high school this coming fall as a ninth grader, and my first act {besides skipping ahead a grade (yes my grades/I.Q. are/is that good) } is to form a Free-Thought club. I really hope that I will be able to influence the staff and my surroundings. Perhaps they will take me a little more seriously/respect me more due to my high SAT scores and the college programs I am taking this summer…

You mean you don’t notice how your home page is nearly always filled with ads? I’ve been on a lot of atheist blogs, and they occasionally have ads for religions. It’s understandable, they’re just ads, but yours is the only one to routinely flog the Mormons. Never used to happen before you came on to Patheos.

  • There is a Mormon add in the header that I don’t think is tailored to the visitor.  I get it in a browser that’s doesn’t have anyhistory too.  But the way I look at it, Patheos is taking money from the LDS to put up some banner ad that I completely ignore.  I get a lot of Mormon ads all over the place.  Hey, if it pays for content, it’s a better use of their money than fighting Prop 8.

  • Annie

That’s a good way to look at it… Mormons funding an atheist blog!  I use No Script, so I don’t see the ads.  I’m always surprised when I use another computer, as I had no idea there were ads on Facebook, here, and most other places on the web.

  • How in the world do you manage to get FB to work with NoScript?  That must be some seriously detailed selective blocking!  I’ve lost that fight.  All my data are belong to the webz.

  • Annie

Easy!  It only took one simple step…  I just had to marry a computer scientist. 😉  I’m not really sure what my husband did, but I know a lot of head scratching was involved for him to get scrabble to work for me.

  • Well I cut out the middle-person, and although I haven’t actually tried it on facebook, in most other cases I gave up and said “allow all this page”.  And then I switched to Chrome for browsing, and keep FF just for Dev.
