    This sums it up. My so-called spiritual mentor once told me, “I’m disappointed you’re asking these kinds of questions.” In other words, don’t answer – just shame the person for asking.

    Of course it goes both ways.  I started out as an agnostic, started asking questions, and ended up on the other side of a religious conversion.

    How many different religions did the people you asked represent? You should probably have thought more carefully about the claims made by all the different religions you didn’t end up converting to. You would more likely have ended up nearer to the truth.

    My questions didn’t start with religions.  My questions began with my own agnosticism and the atheism espoused by those around me.  I then moved on toward reading what I could find (this being the 80s, long before the Internet).  It grew from there.
