A Former Christian Ponders the Cosmos

Just push play, turn the volume up, and then go back to whatever you were doing:

So, what’s it like being an atheist now? Go to the 8:07 mark 🙂

What Are Your Thoughts?leave a comment
  • I recently saw a ‘birdcage’ argument (think watch on the beach).  A theist sees a birdcage and know it has a purpose because it exhibits design.  An atheist (the argument goes) will say the cage is self governing and self creating.

Aside from the irony of using a cage for the analogy, I likened it to a ladybuy seeing a football stadium and assuming the football stadium was built for it.  Except of course that the relative scale of Universe to Human is many orders of magnitude greater, and we can’t live in most of it.

  • My simple three-word response to watchmaker-type arguments is this: “A caveman wouldn’t.”

  • Maybe it’s the extra couple glasses of wine….. but maybe that was the best video ever.

  • I really love the line “.. and we can burn brighter, than the sun.” I believe it. Love, joy, creativity, compassion. We can make this world a wonderful place to begin our journey out into the universe. We can use our short existence to light the way for generations to come. Or not.

  • I find that wine helps shave off that veneer of cynicism I carry around. 🙂

    Yes, thank you jrbutterfly31.

  • H. L. Mencken said it better:

To sum up: 1. The cosmos is a gigantic fly-wheel making 10,000
revolutions a minute. 2. Man is a sick fly taking a dizzy ride on it. 3.
Religion is the theory that the wheel was designed and set spinning to
    give him the ride.

  • Nicely done. I was never handicapped by theism, so I never had this sort of revelation that came with change. But he does echo many of my thoughts. I think that if this universe was created by a god, it’s a pretty ugly universe, indeed. Any half-assed god can make a universe, after all… and as a designed thing, this one is pretty crappy. But as something that evolved naturally, through the unfathomable complexity that emerges when a few simple rules are allowed to interact, the Universe truly is beautiful and awe inspiring.

I should mention that that line is probably a reference to the second song in that that video “We Are Young” by the group “Fun” (?) which is currently my favorite tune.

  • This is awesome and powerfully moving!

  • Thanks everybody! The responses to this video have been tremendous and I’m so thankful it is resonating with so many. More in the works…

  • Please do, this is good shit, not shinola! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2WOF45uP-A

I actually like the images and sounds BEFORE the 8:07 mark … more ‘awesome’; although I enjoyed all of the video.   If you look at all the order and patterns, one must ask … “Is it possible for all this to happen by chance? Or is it the work of an intelligent designer?” There is a one in a blue gazillion chance that all of this could occur without a God. ….. And THIS IS IT! 😉  To me that makes it all the more special. We ARE that lucky one in a blue million chances! Loved the whole idea of it all.
