Lisa Marie Presley vs. Scientology

Lisa Marie Presley has a new album out and the first single from it is called “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.”

Why should anyone care about it?

Because if you look closely at the lyrics, it appears that she’s taking some not-so-subtle jabs at the Church of Scientology. She’s been a longtime member of the cult, but maybe she’s trying to get out for good:

Lay down the truth, don’t make a sound
Just a piece of fruit who’s hit the ground
I don’t respond, I’ve lost the plot
Unethical, not what I thought

You can think that I’m evil and I’m off the rails
You ain’t seen nothin’ yet

I’m a bit transgressive and suppressive as well
Well you ain’t seen nothin’ yet

Am I a disruption to your corruption?
You ain’t seen nothin’ yet

Tony Ortega of the Village Voice spoke to people familiar with Scientology and they agree that these lyrics are a giant “fuck you” to the cult:

When Scientology excommunicates someone, it declares them a “suppressive person” or “SP,” and instructs other Scientologists to “disconnect” from the SP — even the members of the SP’s own family. Church members live in fear of being “declared,” and will do almost anything to stay in the good graces of the church so they can remain in contact with other family members.

No Scientologist of good standing would describe themselves (even jokingly) “a bit suppressive,” as Lisa Marie labels herself here.

… we’re obviously reading a lot of things into these lyrics that Lisa Marie may not have intended, but at the minimum this is an extremely unusual statement for a longtime Scientologist to make, and we hope she speaks publicly about it soon.

If more of the celebrities who share similar views would speak out, it could do more to bring down the cult than any of the stories of abuse.

I literally just finished watching a BBC special about Scientology called “John Sweeney and Scientology”.
It made me so uncomfortable that I am now kind of afraid to make fun of the crazy crazy crazy crazy crazy cult and their bizarre brainwashing techniques.
Oops…it just slipped!  Please don’t stalk me and dig up my deepest, darkest secrets and ruin my life, Cult of  Scientology I MEAN CHURCH!
Anyone have a place I can hide out for a while?

Beware: Narconon isn’t a drug rehab program.  It’s a front.  Scientology bought Narconon, including their client lists/data.

Maybe the next time someone accuses you of only going after Christianity and ignoring Islam, we should ask them what they’ve done about Scientology.

  • I’m sure hoping it’s true!

And it sounds great to boot!

  • For anyone who’s interested in this group, Janet Reitman’s Inside Scientology offers a very thorough investigation.

I sure hope its true, I Love Lisa Marie Presley very much!

  • Iluvelvisforever

    Ive heard this many times.

  • She’s going to need a lot of support.

John Sweeney’s reports are very good, though a bit disturbing. Here’s a taste. He made another follow-up to it later.

Anna, that book is amazing in detail!  I recently read it and just loved it!  Reitman does a great job explaining the cult.  Great recommendation!

I think you’re right that losing even one of their high profile members, and having that member speak out, could do more to weaken Scientology’s claims to legitimacy than anything else that’s ever come out about them, at least in America, simply due to the way the American people relate to celebrities. It would be better if it were Tom Cruise or John Travolta, but I’d take Lisa Marie too.

Also, I never paid much attention to Lisa Marie or her music, even when I was working backstage at one of her concerts, but how heritable are vocal chords characteristics? She not only looks, but sounds so much like a female version of Elvis, it’s kind of stunning.

I sure hope this is true, and there is at least one celebrity brave enough to do something about the abuses and this money grabbing church!!

What an outstanding song. This is tremendously exciting. At the VERY least, this is her saying “come at me bro” to the ‘church’.

  •  So, you think it’s not true?
