  • Never understood that argument… How does a gay marriage ruin the image of marriage , when straight couples cheat and get divorces all the time. Hell, look at the celebrity marriages, that Kim chicks only lasted 72 days.

  • I wish I understood the anti-gay argument that permitting gay marriage will “harm” hetero marriage. Seriously, I don’t get it. And to date, no one has been able to explain it to me, even people who are convinced it’s the case cannot explain it. They’re reduced to saying something along the lines of, it will contribute to the decline of civilization … but since that’s a subjective determination, it’s useless as an explanation.

We threaten religion when we take away another one of their us vs. them rallying points.

They couldn’t even explain it in court and every judge so far has rejected it

It isn’t really about that, although I think that might be one argument the anti-gay tells him/herself, a way to put it into words even though that’s not the real reason for being anti-gay. It’s the 2 Chronicles 7:14 issue, which is very selfish, really. This verse puts responsibility for the country’s morals on the shoulders of the evangelical; the evangelical feels that if he/she “allows” something immoral to occur (ie, immoral according to the bible), to be allowed for by the legislature of his/her country, then god will curse the country. It’s all about making life cushy for oneself, ultimately. It’s very selfish. I don’t think most evangelicals realize how selfish their motives are, but it’s just that.

And if you read that verse, you could rightly argue that it should only refer to Christians, but being a former one myself, I can tell you that it is used to refer to all the population of the US as a whole (the revisionist history thing where this is supposedly a Christian nation). So the evangelical thinks it is his/her responsibility to get all of the US to turn from their “wicked ways”; then god will heal the land, fix the economy, whatever. Ultimately selfish at its root.

The reality is if gay marriage actually caused ANY harm, it would have been shut down through many different channels. However, it does not harm traditional marriage, and  as a result, is becoming legal in more and more states – ie Washington – as it should.

I mean, if one stupid toddler gets its head stuck in a single crib stanchion, the result is a billion dollar product recall. Since we aren’t seeing any hetero-heads getting stuck in cribs, we aren’t seeing the “product” recall.

If we take religion out of the discourse, there is no argument to be made.  That is why, in my opinion, no one can defend it in court.  Without religion, this topic becomes a non-issue, which is where it should be.

  • If’ it’s Old Testament rules for behavior that we’re talking about, then why hasn’t the militant Religious Right started lobbying to have the eating of shellfish or pork outlawed? Those also are forbidden by YHWH in the O.T. Where’s the R.R. opposition to baby-back ribs and clam chowder?
The long and short of it is, I’m not convinced there is even any viable theological and/or scriptural argument to be made against gay marriage. What’s happened is that the R.R. has simply latched onto opposing it … for no reason other than they they personally and subjectively dislike the idea of gay marriage … and are reduced to babbling like infants when asked why it must be outlawed.

  • Basically, the people who say gay marriage threaten marriage are usually both homophobic and gay. They WANT to live with another man or woman, and if they were “allowed” to, they would. In their delusions, they think everyone else is the same way.

In their mind, if gay marriage was legalized, everyone would be gay, and humans would die out. They’re seriously incapable of understanding the concept of WANTING to be with someone of a different gender, rather than doing it out of “duty”.

I thought “Mixing the Races” would cause the downfall of mankind: “Interracial marriage rate doubles in 30 years: how US attitudes have changed” http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2012/0216/Interracial-marriage-rate-doubles-in-30-years-how-US-attitudes-have-changed

  • Gay marriage would probably threaten Michele Bachmann’s marriage.

Somebody had to make the joke…

The first human to marry an alien will be discriminated against the same way.
