  • The mediocre quality of the Qur’an is a good reason to insist on keeping it in Arabic. This lends an air of mystery and solemnity that the text loses to a great extent when it has to stand on its own merits in plain spoken translations.

    Vaguely similar thing going on when some Christians insist on hearing the Bible in King James style. In both cases, original audiences did not receive Special Religious Dialect editions, so non-traditional translations can actually be more authentic.

  • I don’t know if this caught your attention, but in India religious fundamentalism has successfully influenced the government in banning two authors from Literary meets in two different parts of the country- Salman Rushdie and Taslima Nasrin. Latter is a bengali writer living in exile for ‘hurting’ Islam ideology.
