The Reason Rally Publicity Machine is Gearing Up

There are a lot of people working on the Reason Rally event taking place March 24^th, 2012 and those of us on the publicity team (hi!) are kicking things into high gear this weekend.

A few updates:

The first of several promotional videos just went up. This one features PZ Myers talking about why it’s so important that you attend the event:

The Hilton Garden Inn in Washington, D.C. is offering a 50% discount for Reason Rally attendees and check out the room they’re giving our group:

I live in DC but I’m going to have my finals in my Caribbean med school at that time and I’m going to miss the rally. I could have excused missing AAI 2007 because I didn’t know about it until after the fact, but knowing about this so long ahead of time and missing it is killing me. I really hope that someone tapes all of the talks, and even all of the hijinks that go on in between, and posts them on youtube.

I live in the DC area and really wanna attend. Any tips for attending big events in DC? I’ve been to a couple over the years and I never really felt like I was prepared and the experience suffered, sometimes alot. So I’ve steered clear of DC during big events.

It’s important to note that the hotel with the discount is located in Bethesda… about 20 minutes by car (on a good day) from the mall where the rally is being held. If I’m mistaken, please let me know! Thanks. Perhaps there is a metro stop?

Oops, never mind. I read the hotel info. page. There’s a metro stop just a block away, and it says it gets to downtown DC in 7 minutes.

Thankfully it’s in DC or I wouldn’t be able to go. Tax season for accountants isn’t conducive to vacations. As it is I’ll just have to shift some hours around. But I can’t wait.

I’ve been to my fair share of busy events in DC and the key thing is to get to the Metro relatively early and, this is a must, HAVE A PASS ON HAND. All too often people don’t remember to get a Metro pass beforehand and there are just throngs of people in line using the somewhat confusing machines to purchase a pass.

My suggestion is to just to go to their website (http://www.wmata.com/fares/purchase/store/) and purchase a rechargable SmarTrip card which also functions as a parking pass (which won’t be a worry as the rally is on a Saturday and parking is free on weekends).

To add to what Andrew said:

Try to get on the metro at the end of the lines. The cars are empty at the end of the line and you’ll be sure to get a spot. At the Rally to Restore Sanity, I took the metro in from the end of the green line, the car filled completely, and we watched people at the more interior stops looking very sad as the full cars came by.

Also, remember that there is no food or drink allowed on metro. If you have water bottles and stuff like that, keep it tucked away in your backpack out of sight. It’s unlikely to be an issue with so many people, but I’ve seen more than one metro experience ruined as transit authorities made people throw away perfectly good food and drink.

That is not quite right, eating and drinking is not allowed on metro. Hauling a picnic cooler is fine.

We live in the greater Washing area but have not been to a rally since 2002 to protest the looming Iraq invasion. Of course, we know how that turned out… My wife was preggers that year, now my kids are old enough to join us!

Are there any activities or meetings planned before or after the Reason Rally? I really enjoyed the dinner given by the American Humanist Association after the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. It was wonderful to meet several “Friendlies” (FA frequent commenters) whom I admire.
