Terry Jones is Moving… August 19, 2011

Terry Jones is Moving…

Remember Pastor Terry Jones, the guy who wanted to burn a Koran on 9/11 last year?

Looks like his church may be on the move… from Gainesville, Florida to Fort Myers, about 250 miles away:

Jones acknowledged his church received a lot of negative publicity in the past couple years, and admits the church’s beliefs weren’t as accepted in Gainesville.

He said he thinks Fort Myers will be a more welcoming environment.

“We’re not concerned about that,” he said. “We think the community will welcome and accept us.”

The church will change its name when it moves to Fort Myers, and Jones’ son, Luke Jones will take over as senior pastor.

Either no one will even notice… or Jones is going to come out with a new publicity stunt to draw more attention to himself.

My money’s on the latter.

I lived in the Ft. Myers area for 11 years, and my brother was there for over 20. From the belief angle we noticed that the area is indeed religious.  However, the power base down there seems to be Southern Baptist, more concerned with making sure all the right people belonged to the right church as opposed to extreme crackpot (vs. basic Baptist crackpot) issues such as “burn a koran day.”  I suspect this whacko will be welcomed as much as any other thumper who does not beat drum strictly to the Southern Baptist beat.

On the other had, the Koreshans (not the David Koresh folks – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koreshanity , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koreshan_Unity) had a power base just south of Ft. Myers at one time.  Maybe if there are any left he can get together with them and compare/contrast batshit insane theories.

I guess they didn’t find enough total nutters in Gainesville willing to join.

  • “During that church event, Jones sat as the judge as his church held a mock trial for the Quran. After finding the text guilty of three charges, they participated in the burning.
Jones said the church’s charges included the training and promoting of terrorist activities around the world, the death and rape of people worldwide and crimes against women, minorities and Christians.”I’m still wondering if/when they’ll realize they could make the same “charges” against their own holy book.”Jones acknowledged his church received a lot of negative publicity in the past couple years, and admits the church’s beliefs weren’t as accepted in Gainesville. He said he thinks Fort Myers will be a more welcoming environment.”The good people of Fort Myers should feel insulted.

Sounds like Ft. Myers is just the kind of place I hope never to visit.

Gainesville being “a small town with a small town, closed minded mentality.”  Coming from Jones, I take this as a compliment. Yes.  We were too intolerant of his intolerance.  My condolences to the people of Ft. Myers…

Of course Fort Myers is going to welcome him with open arms. They love the anti-muslim bigotry, and the Prof won’t bother to do his research before welcoming them with open arms.

The company I work for is headquartered in Ft. Myers.  I’ve never been there, so not sure how the public will accept a controversial church staking out a spot.

And yes, it’s all about publicity with people like Terry Jones.  I doubt he even believes what he preaches anymore.  The fame of being in the press is more what he’s after anyway.
