The True Story of Abraham and Isaac

By the way, I just paîd $21.87 for an îPad 2-64GB and my boyfriend loves his Panasonîc Lumîx GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS.I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $657 which only cost me $62.81 to buy.

I still like the Family Guy version: as they’re walking down the mountain afterwards, Isaac turns to Abraham and says, “Seriously–what the fuck was THAT all about?”

ALSO, an Arabian movie called “The Emigrant” offers, yet, another version of the story.
No matter what the version, though, the kids and I decided, after seeing “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on stage, that this weird story of these ancient nomads has no “god” message worth having.

The original story is pretty interesting – if only people would read what it says. The trouble is that the Judeo/Christian tradition assumes there is only one god. Who happens to have lots of different names. Give the story to someone who knows nothing at all about the traditions and  something interesting emerges – one of the gods – Elohim – demands that the child be sacrificed. And then another – Yahweh – steps in and says, hey, don’t do that.
But the traditional understanding makes it almost impossible to see this even though it’s obvious in the original text. Hey ho.

Well, if the Romans, and Greeks and Norse, and Inuit and Japanese get to have mythology, so do the Jews. I’m OK with it as long as you recognize it’s a myth designed to show the power and mercy of the god that that culture at that time believed in. It’s a window into cultural history and no more than that. 

Now that’s the kind of bible story I get!
