Nice Job, Chris McCoy! July 30, 2011

Nice Job, Chris McCoy!

Chris McCoy launched a campaign to raise $50,000 for charity via GiveBack. He asked people at /r/atheism to help him out… and he won!

What’s more impressive is that he didn’t start the 100-day contest until Day 92:

With only a week remaining, Chris knew he needed to work fast and work smart. The 29 year-old saw the contest as an opportunity to support causes he is interested in, specifically organizations without religious affiliations which support children and communities in need. As a self-described “secular humanist,” he was inspired when he discovered two Reddit “sub-communities” collaborating to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders and World Vision during the last holiday season. The two communities, r/atheism and r/Christianity raised over $64,000. He decided to ignite the r/atheism community of 150,000 for the 100 Days of Giving Contest. In only a few days, “Chris M.” hit the number one slot on the leaderboard.

The money, we were told, would be split between groups including:
  • Secular Student Alliance
  • Doctors without Borders
  • Center for Inquiry
  • Freedom From Religion Foundation
  • Foundation Beyond Belief

I hope that’s still the case because they’re all great causes and they’ll put the money to good use.

I love it when atheists band together for a worthy cause 🙂 More of this!

I can’t believe atheists aren’t broke yet. Seems like we get asked to donate to something every week.

  • I don’t mind it. These smaller and less institutional charities and drives are far more worthwhile than when I was donating to the larger ones who would often share out or support causes I can’t stand…
