Mid Ohio Atheists Adopt a Highway

The Mid Ohio Atheists (in Mansfield) recently adopted a two-mile stretch of highway — Interstate 71, between mile markers 166 and 168 — and they recently did their second cleanup:

It took about 3 hours to do the cleanup and get everyone back off the interstate. Many of us went to a local fast food restaurant for lunch afterwards.

I want to thank everyone that participated, it’s people like you that will put a positive face on atheism for the world to see. For those with open minds, it shows that helping and serving others is a human thing, not a god thing.

We need to do 2 more cleanups before the end of the season in October. The next pickup will be September 10th and the last one for this year will be October 22nd.

If you’re in the area, and you’d like to help out in the future, you can get updates on their blog or Facebook page. Here’s hoping they get an even bigger group together for their next cleanup!

On a side note, they just had a picnic over the weekend and had an excellent turnout. We need more groups like this!

  • Oh noes! But what if the sight of your sign causes some teenage daughter to rebel? 🙂

But in all seriousness, great work!

  • It’s getting a little creepy that you post stories about things the same day I do them… our group had our second highway cleanup today, too 🙂

Some of those people look like they could really use the exercise.

The only thing that could be better is if they picked the stretch of highway that passes the solid rock church, the one where big butter jesus burned to the ground.

Oh and anonymous, I am 400 pounds, my cholesterol is 122, what is yours?
My Dr’s love me as I am in nearly perfect health (two fake knees thanks to a high school foot ball injury). They love that I am willing to show people that skinny does not equal healthy.
Size means nothing when it comes to health.

They look like the members of most atheist groups I have visited.  Usually a bunch of out of shape, often old, white people.

I was driving up to my home in the northeast part of Ohio when my wife pointed out that sign. It did me proud.

  • If the worse thing people can think to say about our group is were fat, I can take that.  :-p   Everyone knows Religion makes you skinny……or something like that.

That’s strange, I don’t remember saying anything about them being fat.

  • At least they aren’t killing people or hating the Jews like you’ve accused us of doing in the past, Randall…

  • Ooh, zing. You sure showed them! Run along now.

That’s a side effect, not a reason for helping others.

Everyone seems to see the negative. Not the positive. I expect theists to be critical, always seeing the downside. Last year I was 10 pounds lighter. I could use a little more activity, but between working 10 hours a day and keeping up on work around the house, finding time for even sitting at the computer is difficult.
