God’s Goodness Gave Us This Video

I don’t know why this video is appearing everywhere, but it is:

Is it a Poe? I don’t even care to find out. (***Update***: The commenters all say this is indeed a Poe.)

Even if it were true, one young, crazy Christian doesn’t say anything about the other people following the faith. It’s easy to point to her as a victim of Christian brainwashing, but I don’t know a single Christian who would agree with what she says. (Even the comments from Christians on YouTube are overwhelmingly negative.)

She’s getting way more attention than she deserves.

Save your energy for the church leaders and pastors and everyone else with more authority. Their type of crazy speaks for far more people than tamtampamela does.

It’s definitely fake. She’s been linked to Landover Baptist and she apparently posted a video admitting the hoax before shutting down her youtube channel.

  • Iason Ouabache

The video is gone now. It says that there is a copyright claim by LaughAloneTV. It’s a pity because I couldn’t sit through more than 5 seconds of it yesterday and I was going to masochistically try to sit through the whole thing this morning. I’m sure someone will mirror it again at some point.

  • Uncle Bob

I used to be subscribed to her. She is a well known Poe.

  • it’s fake.
she made another video called ‘coming clean’ and subsequently ended her account.

  • Poe.

  • El Bastardo

Not sure she was a poe per sé, more a dumb teenager. Whether she was an Atheist trying to lampoon Christians, or a Christian trying to anger and get reactions from Atheists is unclear.

All she did was draw a lot of heat.

So called “moderate” Christians will say “Oh we don’t believe that, we’re nice Christians” or “Oh those Atheists will believe anything but the magnificence of god”

She’s highlights nothing beyond that fact that stupid people say stupid things and most people will get pissed off when dumb asses mock a recent tragedy.

  • Claudia

She’s a troll. Her real identity has been revealed by the mega-troll collective on 4Chan /b/ and she has closed her account. Mirror of her “coming clean” (not really, since there’s no apology for being a troll) here.

  • I would place this chick and Dammit Mike in the same category – trolls looking for attention. I don’t get why either one is being featured anywhere, yet here we are.

  • She was so dead-pan-real that her satire was no different from the religious rhetoric. This was more a case of impression than satire.

Meanwhile there are genuinely sincere religious views saying exactly the same thing (with the exception of specifically praying for the disaster). But unfortunately there’s no comfort in realising they don’t actually mean it.

That girl has issues! Her “coming clean” video said her intent was to piss people off and that it was fun. What a narcissist.

  • Peter Mahoney

I think that her videos have been hilarious. While her videos were clearly POE, they highlighted the insanity of true believers.

There ARE indeed LOTS of people here in the United States who really DO believe that the tragedies of Sept. 11th, or Hurricane Katrina were the wrath of God (Yahweh) on USA due to gays, or due to liberal judges, or due to getting rid of prayer in schools, etc.

Also, there are MANY Muslims worldwide who believe that ‘Allah is Great’ for the way he helped bring down the Twin Towers.

Her videos use blatant satire to point out the insanity of religious believers. Very effective.

Whether you agree with her tactics or not, it is a shame that her voice and creativity have been effectively shut down by threats of violence (murder, rape, etc) that some bloggers, etc. have reportedly made against her, while posting her home phone/address, etc.

Just as we should defend the RIGHTS of believers to believe/express beliefs we do not agree with, we should defend the RIGHTS of nonbelievers to express their disbelief.

You can criticize her tactics, but no one should condone the threats of violence against her.

  • tamtampamela is a poe artist of epic skill. She actually had two years of Youtube work and stayed in character. Anyone who really paid attention could tell she was being sarcastic. Most people attacked her ruthlessly because they made no attempt to try to understand what she was doing. It was amazing to see the number of otherwise normal atheists tell her they were going to kill her and piss on her grave. The Youtube outrage was epic as atheists stumbled over themselves to insult her. Nice work everyone. Proof that stupidity is easy to find.

The whole point to a poe is that true religious nutjobs are so crazy that you can’t tell them from satire. Their behavior is so crazy that satire doesn’t work. This really just proves the point… right?

If you want to see some good Youtube work go to the Youtube channel of Thunderf00t and you can see tamtam’s original video (that she has taken down on her page).

You guys do understand that she was not mocking the Japanese or the earthquake victims. She was mocking religious nutjobs. Please…please… tell me you are smart enough to see that.

  • El Bastardo

    @Peter Mahoney

While her videos were clearly POE

Erm, if it’s clear then it’s not a Poe.

Her videos use blatant satire to point out the insanity of religious believers. Very effective.

Again, not so blatant. If she was that satirical she wouldn’t have drawn the heat she did for this insane post.

Besides, she herself said she did it to piss people off, not to satirize the beliefs of the religious.

  • GregFromCos

Again, not so blatant. If she was that satirical she wouldn’t have drawn the heat she did for this insane post.

I disagree. I had never seen her before, but from my first watch it seemed to be satire. She called Lenten, Lentil in this video. In other videos she wore an evolution t-shirt. In another video, she thought the key question to confound atheists was “If god did not write the Bible, then who did?” In another video she says she is going to sing a song she wrote about god’s love, and talks about how he is going to burn liars. A clear shot at herself. She was very clear to me.

I find it troubling, how so many freethinkers wanted her to be Christian, because she so closely fit the stereotype they wanted to be true. I find it funny how it always seems the same freethinkers get taken in by the Poe’s. You’d think at some point they would figure out that, their stereotype, might be a bit over the top.

I’m still trying to decide if I think the satire was in bad taste, or if the beliefs she was satirizing were what were so repugnant. I’d lean towards the latter.

  • Claudia

The goals of a satirist and a troll are markedly different. The satirist uses exaggeration to poke fun and criticize that which is being satirized. The satirist has as his or her goal eliciting laughter and sometimes also advocating a certain position.

The troll on the other hand has as his or her goal only to cause disruption, hurt and anger, as well as leeching as much attention as they possibly can to themselves.

In her “coming clean” (HA!) video, she makes clear that her goal was to “piss people off”. She literally says that she makes “troll videos”. This makes her a self-admitted troll. I certainly don’t wish her to come to harm, but I sure as hell don’t want anyone to think she represents me as an atheist. EdwardCurrent is a brilliant satirist. This young woman is a troll, and hence ironically belongs with the 4chan hive that is currently making her life hell more than she belongs in this community.

  • What community are you talking about Claudia when you state: “This young woman is a troll, and hence ironically belongs with the 4chan hive that is currently making her life hell more than she belongs in this community.”

This community? What community is that? The Claudia community. Are you queen of the atheists or something?

  • Claudia

This community? What community is that? The Claudia community. Are you queen of the atheists or something?

Your question is rhetorical since you obviously know I mean the atheist community. I trust you believe that such a community exists, since otherwise questioning someone’s in/exclusion would be silly. Though communities are to a certain extent amorphous and unmanagable, the can be, and are, policed by members to a certain extent. Thus, the LGBT community has a right to exclude NAMBLA, that briefly tried to ally itself with the larger community. As such, I think this young woman, given her behavior and stated goals, more properly belongs in a community that is based on trolling than a community based on a nontheistic worldview. Do I get to decide all by my lonesome that she shouldn’t be in the community? No. Do I have a right to voice my opinion that she doesn’t belong in any community that also includes Richard Wade or Daniel Dennett? You bet I do.

  • Indeed Claudia – I agree that you simply have a vote as to tamtam’s membership in your tiny piece of your little community. This is the only influence I have as well. It is just that you sound really pretentious when you claim she is not welcome in the “atheist community”. In my little version of the “atheist community” tamtam is a lifetime member with a special youtube medal of honor. I would rather have tamtam as a friend than some lame-ass moralist. My choice I guess…. you know… you can chose your friends and that sort of thing.

  • Richard Wade

Whether she’s a poe, or a troll, or a satirist, or good at what she does is completely beside the point.

    She’s cruel.

She’s cruel to the Japanese people, to atheists, and to Christians. If you frown on an opportunistic demagogue like Pat Robertson taking advantage of the suffering of hundreds of thousands of quake victims to promote his religious or political views, well guess what? She’s doing the exact same ruthless thing. She’s no better than the people she is supposed to be “satirizing.” She’s not trying to make anything better by pointing out craziness. Nothing but more hatred and enmity will come of this. This is merely for her own selfish entertainment. She’s getting sadistic glee from “pissing people off.”

  • Richard – Is being cruel always a bad thing? I think not… and besides, she didn’t CAUSE the earthquake. Give me a break.

Can’t we just all get along…. pffffffffft.

You are profiting from the earthquake as well…since you get to moralize to us about how nice you are. “See everyone… I feel bad about what happened and this makes me a good person”. Congratulations.

I happen to think there is great value in pointing out the craziness of others. Great value indeed.

  • SWare

Cruel and sadistic is right. *insert sarcasm* Such things to aspire to!

  • El Bastardo

    @ Richard Wade

    Agreed.

No point to make, just doing it for poopies and haw haws.

  • Richard Wade

    John D,

Richard – Is being cruel always a bad thing? I think not… and besides, she didn’t CAUSE the earthquake. Give me a break.

It sounds like you’re either right on the edge of saying that cruelty is only a bad thing if it’s done to you, or you’re saying it’s only bad if it produces no good outcome. I hope that cruelty is never done to you, because I would consider it bad regardless. As for outcomes, I hazard to say that I’ve witnessed more cruelty than many people, but I’ve never seen a good result, such as kindness, come from it. Cruelty just begets more of itself.

I didn’t claim that she caused the earthquake. What you’re trying to argue with that statement is beyond my understanding. Pat Robertson, in his self-serving demagoguery claimed that God did it, and this girl, in her self-serving parody claimed that God did it too.

The cruelty of both is in their trivializing the suffering of the victims and using them as a platform. She adds to that the cruelty of fomenting more hatred between Christians and atheists.

Can’t we just all get along…. pffffffffft.

That’s not what I was implying, but if you’re deriding with disdain all attempts to appeal to people getting along, all I can say is that sounds awfully cynical.

You are profiting from the earthquake as well…since you get to moralize to us about how nice you are. “See everyone… I feel bad about what happened and this makes me a good person”. Congratulations.

If you think that the only motive, or my only motive behind objecting to cruelty is the opportunity to make self-righteous postures, that seems to be more cynicism on your part. The worst mistake that cynics make is to assume that everyone else is secretly a cynic too.

Don’t let this take root in you. Cynicism is the rot of the heart. You have better things to offer than end-justifies-means arguments, and bitter dismissals of people who appeal to the best in each other. I’m appealing to the best in that girl, and to the best in you. This is not from a position of my superiority, but from my own painful history of cruelty and cynicism.

  • Haha Richard. I think that a dose of cynicism is a good thing. It is certainly better to be a bit cynical than to try to go through life with rose colored glasses on your nose.

Thanks for trying to tell me how to be happy. Just so you know, I am 50 years old and have more than a bit of experience in happiness. Were you a preacher in a former life? I am quite satisfied looking at life with a jaundiced eye. At least my eyes are open. I know that when I decide to buy a triple frapachino that I am spending enough money to feed a starving child from a third world country for weeks. I can live with that… can you?

All things in moderation and all things as they suit the situation. Tamtampamela didn’t hurt anyone. She didn’t hurt the Japanese… that is for sure. She did hurt some people’s feelings, and I am okay with that sometimes.

Niceness is over rated. It is great to be nice to bigots if you want to be treated like a door mat. I happen to not like being treated like a door mat, so when someone assaults the most ignorant bigots in the Christian world (such as Pat) I give a hearty congratulations.

  • Patrick

Could someone give me a definition of “Poe” as it is being used here, and at similar sites? By context, it appears to refer to an internet post of dubious sincerity or outright fakery. Is it an acronym?

  • Rabid

“A Poe” in this context is someone intentionally engaging in fakery that embodies Poe’s Law.

  • Patrick

Thanks! Now I can go on with my life . . .
