It’s Missing a Scarlet A…

Over at Reddit, postguy2 created a new icon for atheism:

Hmph. That man looks nothing like me. I’m deeply offended.

I have to say this whole baby-eating shtick is well past its sell-by date. It’s just childish and stupid, and whatever humor there once was to be found in it has long since expired. This meme cannot die soon enough.

  • I love it.

May I also suggest a version that shows a 1950s woman holding the knife and fork? It would be cool to see women represented and plus, it would tweak people’s gender stereotypes surrounding women, child-rearing, and babies.

I’ve always been creeped out by people’s assumptions that women are automatically maternal, baby-making machines and the religious right does its best to push these oppressive, gendered ideas via the complementarianism movement.

  • He’s wearing a suit, he’s such a sell-out. Now this baby-eating thing is going to be a corporate meme :-P.

  • SwimsWithSharks

I love you man, but the baby-eating thing is starting to get a little old…

  • OH HAHA I GET IT BECAUSE ATHEISTS EAT BABIES THAT’S SO FUNNY AND THE METAPHOR IS SO FRESH AND UNDERRATED.

    /sarcasm

  • Synapse

    Agreed with the majority.

    Please stop perpetuating this bullsh!t.

It’s nowhere near as funny as you think it is. Please let this die.

  • Synapse

Would you encourage blacks to continue the “black men are rabid to rape white women” meme from the early 20th century and from the “Birth of a Nation”?

  • Earl

Lighten up, folks! babies are delicious!!!!!

Yes I completely agree. And that version should show a woman of color as well. As in every other aspect of the atheism movement, women are underrepresented in baby eating. This is a shameful inequity. It’s an embarrassment for me as a white male that atheist women and atheists of color are never portrayed as baby eaters too. I’m actually surprised they don’t complain more.

Don’t waste your breath, friends. I’ve given up suggesting that this fossilized joke should be retired, even though it usually has to be explained to theists. I’ve met far more who never even heard of the myth that Jews and atheists ate babies than those who have heard of it, so it doesn’t serve as a poke in their ribs about having dumb stereotypes about us. It just makes us look like the ones resentfully holding onto false stereotypes about them.

If we want some “in” jokes for camaraderie, that is fine, but maybe we could come up with new material.

But here I am again, wasting my breath.

I have to agree. I’m as sarcastic as it comes, but this shit has gotten stupid. I have 3 kids. Trying to raise them secular and stuff like this, while I understand the joke, is not funny. Cmon Hemant.

I’d ask for an image description for those of us who can’t see it, but I’m also in the “enough with the baby-eating meme already” camp, so in this particular case, I doubt I’d return to this post to see if you/someone else as provided one.

  • I’ve always enjoyed campy retorts that poke fun at the oppositions’ attempt to villainize us. It’s a tactic that has been common among LGBT folk for decades now, and given that I hail from those quarters, I’m quite fond of it.

Ah well, what some find to be humorous, others see as distasteful. Such is life.

For those who do not see this humor as passé or offensive, check out these three variations on the theme. These posters are relatively new for me, and they make me chuckle each time I see them. I think the poster under the third link is especially cute.

I’m an agnostic, so I’m not sure if I should be eating babies or not.

Though I wish this meme would come to a Swift conclusion…

  • Karen

Jesus H. Enough with the babies already.

  • veggiedude

Today we may frown at the founding fathers for having slaves. In 200 years, people will frown on us for eating animal flesh.

  • Drew M.

    @Clint,

Though I wish this meme would come to a Swift conclusion…

    I laughed. Hard.

  • Crux Australis

Agreed: was funny the first time. Let it go.

  • Sean Santos

I still like the baby-eating thing. (Anyway, it seems fairly harmless to humor Hemant when he does something silly that he seems to enjoy so much.)

  • Patrick

    enough already

  • RAWR BABY BACKLASH.

    Also, lol “Swift conclusion.”

  • Nordog

I still know of no one talking about atheists eating babies except for the atheists at this site.
