What Is and Isn’t An ‘Act of God’?

Comedian Ricky Gervais has an entertaining bit about what constitutes an “Act of God” in his latest stand-up special “Science”:

LOL I love this. When my best friend’s house burned down because PG&E didn’t cut the giant tree over their electrical line running over his house (that his family called repeatedly for them to do), his insurance company decided it was an act of god and didn’t pay him 🙁

    WTH is insurance FOR then???

  • Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

    I love it!

  • Ricky G is looking rather fit, isn’t he?

Transferring money from your pocket…to theirs?

  • To be honest this video actually showed me how Ricky Gervais was not made for stand-up shows, I can’t find him funny.. at all.

About the subject. Yeah, like most things religion-related, this is just another problem we can identify on most followers. What I believe to be THE most soft spot of religious belief is exactly this type of subjectivity.

I had a similar discussion with someone on the topic of miracles, with him suggesting that he had seen an actual miracle when he was serving in Afghanistan because a buddy (who was an atheist) drove over an IED which destroyed the vehicle but his friend walked away without a scratch.
To which I pointed out that if an atheist not dying from an IED was a miracle, what exactly was it when one of the faithful was blown to bits? A reverse miracle?
And, if God really decided to have a hand in something during a war, does it seem reasonable that he would do something small like save a single soldier and not something big like, I don’t know, stop the war?

I LOL’ed. Now I want to watch the whole thing.

  • I like Ricky Gervais well enough, but Bill Bailey said it much better when he goes into why his rental car insurance didn’t cover ‘Acts of God.’

“A plague of locusts swarm round the vehicle, rip the wing mirrors off and I’m liable for twenty pounds excess?!”

LOL. I love Ricky Gervais. I never watched “The Office,” but I adored “Extras.” The episode with Kate Winslet, and the one with Daniel Radcliffe, were genius.

The Invention of Lying was good, though not great.

Ricky G is looking rather fit, isn’t he?

Indeed. I was noticing that, too.
