Iowa Atheists Have a Highway, Too

Looks like Greensboro and Amarillo aren’t alone. The Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers have their own highway, too!

Which other atheists groups have their own stretches of road?

Someone needs to be cataloguing this…

  • But… but why would Atheists do helpful things? No one is going to reward them in the next life for this! They don’t even believe anyone is keeping score.

  • I believe the Center for Inquiry of Southern Arizona (in Tucson) has a stretch of road. Of course, since their name isn’t as… atheistic as some, it might not have the same effect as these ‘Atheist’ signs.

    @Jeffrey- I guess they need something to do to keep busy in between baby eating and the oppression of the righteous.

  • Minnesota Atheists have a section of Highway 35, and the Cannon Falls Freethinkers have a section of Highway 52 in MN.

  • We (the Secular Students and Skeptics Society at the University of Colorado at Boulder) were going to adopt a stretch of road, but we thought a) it would seem too much like we were just trying to show off and b) no one litters here anyway.

    Instead, we’re doing a Habitat for Humanity build tomorrow. We probably won’t get a plaque or anything, but we can wield a hammer as well as any Christian.

    I’m sure some theist will drive by and complain about the evil, immoral atheists posting their “signs” on public property because it’s offensive to their gawd given Christian “rights”, or some other nonsensical reason.
    Either that, or the sign will be defaced, in the name of some all powerful, omniscient, genocidal, bigoted, slavery promoting, wrathful, yet all loving and wonderful, mystical sky wizard.

    Also, Interstate 90 in Southern MN has the Rochester Area Freethinkers. Makes me happy each time I see it.

    I’m from Iowa and this doesn’t surprise me at all….and I’m a little torn about how I should take the take the title of the post. On one hand, the title seems that Hemant is excited about the fact that Iowa has group of atheists that clean up a highway, and on the other hand, I’m miffed because it seems that the title suggests that Iowa is a backward conservative state. Iowa is a very progressive state. Gay people can get married here…not in Illinois. Yes, there are a lot of conservatives in Iowa…but progressives here are the ones, who I would argue, got Obama the nomination.

    Anyway, I agree with “scott”: Go Hawks!

    What? All it says that there’s another group in addition to the ones he’s mentioned in this past. Am I missing something?

    I don’t think you need to worry, mate. It’d be different if he’d said ‘Even Iowa has an atheist-sponsored highway’ or something along those lines – Secular Planet is right, he’s just saying hey, look, here’s another one.

  • If belief in god(s) has nothing to do with help, compassion and morality, why should non-belief in god(s) have anything to do with the same? As a plumber, a professor, a businessman, a nurse – as an individual – I may, of my free will, choose to contribute to keep my neighborhood clean and environmentally safe. Where is the need to associate it with a label, and keep score?

    Symbols, relics, and monuments are there to fill the emptiness of religion. Reason has little or no use for these.

  • Capital Beltway Atheists has one – although there is talk on our Board of getting rid of it – it’s not the most effective way we would be spending time to make a better community.
